On Saturday, June 20th, Ken May and his son Kenny officiated the Poway Kickin It Challenge Soccer Tournament held at Ryan Park in Escondido. Soccer teams from all over Southern California participated in the “Unite in the Fight” against breast cancer soccer tournament. Many teams wore pink jerseys or pink soccer socks to show their support in the fight against this disease that has touched so many of our lives.
As a referee, it was nice to experience teams on the pitch and parents and coaches on the sidelines that remembered the meaning of the tournament. There was a lot of camaraderie and the good feeling that goes along with helping out such a noble cause.
Personally, I thought about Sandy Pryce, the mom of Nicole Pryce who I coached many years ago with the Lightning Soccer Club. Sandy was such a positive person who supported us in every way. Her loss was devastating to us all.
I would like to give a big shout-out to my former cohort at Lightning, Toni DeCarlo who is the Tournament Director of the event.
Personally, my son and I would have enjoyed “getting our pink on” but as referees, we are not allowed to alter the official uniform. It was a great event for a very worthy cause which I look forward to participating in each and every year.
