It's a beautiful day driving alongside the ocean when you look up and see a vehicle coming head on in your lane as they try to pass somebody else. You tense your grip on the steering wheel and brace for an impact but they see you in time and swerve back into their own lane.
Except they clip the rear of the car they were trying to pass and spin into your lane perpendicular. You make eye contact with the horrified passenger and then there is an explosion that deafens your world, an impact that knocks the breath from you so you can't even scream in terror and as your vehicle is flipping you see that the passenger in the car you just t-boned is now behind the drivers seat and the driver who is still buckled in his seat has shot out from the side of the car into a wall.
As your car lands on its roof and you see everything in slow motion--your phone flying, your drink flying, your hair rushing upside down--you look on in disbelief as the car you hit with the passenger trapped inside careens into the car that was behind you and you hear an incredible scream of metal and smell the scent of burned rubber.
As you hang upside down tasting metallic blood fill your mouth, you take inventory and you know it's not good. One shoulder is dislocated, your pelvis is crushed, but the worst part that will follow you forever is seeing the carnage of the car you hit as it lies in two unrecognizable pieces with the occupants clearly deceased in what can only be described as a gruesome mess of blood and car parts.
Although the loss was not your fault you feel horrible. And you know that you are critically injured.
Later down the road after you are released from the hospital to be bedridden at home for a few weeks, you find out that the other car has the state minimum for insurance.
Medical bills alone are exorbitant but add to that the mental anguish and you are floored.
Thankfully your agent explained the importance of substantial uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. It can't erase the trauma that you have been through, but it will certainly take care of you in your time of need.
