new carsAuto insurance rates are calculated based on a number of factors, including gender, age, location and driving record. But the model of car you drive plays a large role in determining how much you’ll pay for coverage. You are not wrong in assuming that sports cars and luxury cars are the most expensive to insure, but which models are the cheapest?

After extensive surveys, it’s been concluded that minivans, pickup trucks and mid-priced crossover SUVs cost the least to insure. The average costs were determined based on a single, 40-year-old male driver with a good driving record and good credit who commutes less than 15 miles to work. Women and married men generally pay less for insurance, while adults under age 25 (particularly males) can expect to pay more, along with drivers who have a marred driving record.

Why does the model of car matter so much if the same baseline driver was used to calculate this information? Apart from a car’s price tag, claims histories reveal which models sustain more damage in an accident, have higher bodily injury claims and have a higher rate of theft, which would all result in higher premiums.

Based on this information, the 15 cheapest cars to insure are as follows:

  1. Toyota Sienna: An average annual premium of $1,111
  2. Jeep Patriot Sport: An average annual premium of $1,116
  3. Jeep Compass Sport: An average annual premium of $1,118
  4. GMC Sierra: An average annual premium of $1,121
  5. Chevrolet Silverado: An average annual premium of $1,125
  6. Ford Escape: An average annual premium of $1,137
  7. Dodge Grand Caravan: An average annual premium of $1,143
  8. Dodge Journey: An average annual premium of $1,143
  9. Honda Odyssey: An average annual premium of $1,146
  10. Kia Sportage: An average annual premium of $1,151
  11. Hyundai Santa Fe: An average annual premium of $1,152
  12. Jeep Wrangler: An average annual premium of $1,154
  13. Nissan Frontier: An average annual premium of $1,162
  14. Hyundai Tucson: An average annual premium of $1,166
  15. GMC Canyon: An average annual premium of $1,167
Wondering about the higher end of the spectrum? Cars with average insurance costs exceeding $2,500 annually include the Jaguar XKR, Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz CL and SL Class, Nissan GT-R, the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and, the most expensive car to insure—at a whopping $3,384 annually—is the Audi R8 Spyder Quattro.
